プリンストン日本語学校のご紹介

プリンストン日本語学校は、１９８０年に創立され、１９９６年に現在のライダー大学のビエレンバウム・フィッシャー・ホールに移転するまでは、プリンストン大学の校舎を借りて授業を行っていました。創立当時は主に当地に在住する日本人研究者の家族の子供たちのための学校でしたが、現在は265名の児童・生徒が通学する日本語学校です。

創立の精神は「日本語と日本文化を学ぶ意欲のあるすべての人に門を開く」というもので、このスピリットに基づいて、他の補習校には例のない３つの教育部門が設置されています。

補習校部は、文科省認可の補習校として帰国を予定する 小学生から高校生に日本国内の指導要領に準じて国語教育を提供し、日本語継承語部では、アメリカに永住予定の児童・生徒に質の高い継承日本語教育を行うプリンストンコースを提供しています。また、JASLコースでは、日本に関わりのある家庭の子供や日本のポップカルチャーに興味のある現地の中学生が、初歩から日本語を勉強しています。さらに成人のためには、コミュニティーコースも併設しています。幼稚園部では、海外で育つ子どもたちに楽しく日本語で保育を行っています。

このようにプリンストン日本語学校は、グローバル化する世界に伴って多様化する子どもたちの言語環境、学習目的を考慮し、それぞれのニーズに最もふさわしい教育の機会を提供する努力をして参りました。また、この「すべての人に門戸を開く」というスピリットの実現を、校内のすべての人が連携し支えてきました。教育部門では、教員の一人一人が創意と熱意をもってクラス運営にあたり、運営部門では、総務オフィスを核として、父母会との連携のもと、学校運営、各種行事のほとんどが保護者の手で行われています。

プリンストン日本語学校では多様な生徒に対応する柔軟なカリキュラムを提供しており、当校は時代を先取りしたカリキュラムを備える在外日本語教育機関として注目されています。それに甘んじることなく、ますます多様化するであろう子供たちの日本語教育のニーズに常に目を向けて、真のグローバルシチズンを育てるべく、成長を続けていく所存でございます。本年度も皆様のご支援をどうぞよろしくお願いいたします。

Introduction to Princeton Community Japanese Language School

Princeton Japanese Language School was founded in 1980 and initially held classes in buildings rented from Princeton University. In 1996, the school moved to its current location at Biernbaum Fisher Hall on the Rider University campus. At the time of its founding, the school primarily served the children of Japanese researchers residing in the area. Today, it has grown into a school with 265 students.

The school was founded on the principle of “opening its doors to all who have the desire to learn the Japanese language and culture.” Based on this spirit, Princeton Community Japanese Language School has established three unique educational divisions that set it apart from other Hoshuko (supplementary schools).

The Hoshuko Division, officially recognized by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), provides Japanese language instruction to elementary through high school students who plan to return to Japan, following Japan’s national curriculum guidelines. The Japanese as Foreign & Heritage Language Division offers the Princeton Course, a high-quality heritage Japanese language education program for children who plan to remain in the United States learning about their Heritage language and culture. The JASL Course provides Japanese as a Foreign language class from beginner-level Japanese language education for local elementary and middle school students from families with ties to Japan and those interested in Japanese pop culture. Additionally, the school offers a Community Course for High School students and adult learners. The Kindergarten Division provides a fun and engaging Japanese-language environment for young children growing up abroad.

Princeton Community Japanese Language School is committed to meeting the diverse linguistic environments and learning objectives of children in an increasingly globalized world. We continuously strive to offer educational opportunities tailored to each student’s needs. Moreover, the entire school community works together to uphold our founding spirit of inclusivity. Each teacher in the Educational Division approaches their classes creatively and enthusiastically. In the Administrative Division, the General Affairs Office works closely with the Parent-Teacher Association, and parents play a central role in the school’s operations and various events.

Our school provides a flexible curriculum that accommodates a diverse student body, making us a leading institution in Japanese language education abroad. However, we do not rest on our achievements. We remain committed to meeting the ever-evolving needs of Japanese language education and nurturing true global citizens.
